Wady Rayan – El Fayyoum
A leading pump manufacturer spent many years building an elaborate floating pump station to be used by 1700 families of Egyptian farmers for crop irrigation. Due to unpredictable water fluctuation, the pump station was built in the middle of the lake on a barge. In June 1999, the station, which took approximately 3 years to build, caught on fire and sank killing 7 people. Needing nothing less than a miracle to save the farmers depending on the station, the government of Egypt with the help of MWI used a series of three 42`` Hydraflo pumps (2m3/s at 12m head) to achieve the required head of 32m. This station was out into operation within two weeks after fire proving the cost and time advantages associated with the minimal civil works required by the Hydraflo.
